Layout Setup SOP


A. Prior to Show - All Members (AM)

  1. Insure you have module(s), legs, nuts, bolts, washers, tools, connector track, 4 2" or 3" C-clamps, skirting, buildings, vehicles, engines and trains staged in a central location, ready for loading and transporting to show

B. Pre Show Checklist - Modular Superintendant (MS)

  1. Get participating module list from members
    1. Set setup time
    2. Arrange transportation if needed
  2. Arrange module layout and track plan
    1. Designate Command Station and Booster locations
    2. Designate UTP location
  3. Assign functional responsibilities for Module and DCC/Electrical Setup crews

*** Each member is responsible for their own module(s). If a member cannot be at a particular phase of the show, it is their responsibility to find a maintainer ***

C. Setup Day - Finish Each Major Step Before Going to Next Step

  1. Transportation and unloading (AM)
    1. Unload modules and all other stuff in general location of layout
    2. Check with MS or track plan for final module location
  2. Module Setup (AM and Module Crew)
    1. Setup all modules - NO CONNECTIONS (Track or Electrical)
    2. Level all modules
      1. Leveling Procedure - set left and right height to 40" to top of rail or 39 13/16" to top of roadbed (rail and tie height is 3/16"). Level module front to back at both ends. Move to next module.
    3. Check alignment of modules prior to connection modules
  3. Module Connection (AM and Module Crew)
    1. Module setup crews, beginning at Charlie's lift bridge, begin connecting/clamping modules together
    2. Ensure smoothe transition between modules
    3. Do Not Connect Electrical or Connector Track
    4. After all modules are connected check Charlie's lift bridge for proper operation
  4. DCC/Electrical Connection (DCC/Electrical Crew)
    1. Place Command Station, Boosters and power supplies per track plan
    2. Run extension cords to power supplies
    3. Place district flags and insulated rail joiners for district separations
    4. Starting with Command Station district, connect wires to mainline and power to booster. Test operation.
    5. Working clockwise from Command Station, connect the next booster and test operation.
    6. After all boosters are connected and tested install the UTP's according to track plan and test operation.
  5. Track Connection (DCC/Electrical Crew)
    1. Place and connect connector track, mainline only. Ensure mainline is double insulated.
      1. Fix any mismatches in connector track
    2. Test-run trains on mainline tracks
    3. Clean mainline
    4. Place and connect remaining connector tracks
    5. Clean remaining tracks
  6. Attach Backdrops (AM)
  7. Place Structures and Other Scenery Items (AM)
  8. Attach Skirting and Safety Guards (AM)
  9. Add Trains (AM)

E. Tear Down

  1. Remove Trains
  2. Remove Skirting and Safety Guards
  3. Remove Structures and Other Scenery Items
  4. Remove Backdrops
  5. Remove UTP's
  6. Remove Command Station and Boosters
  7. Disconnect all Connector Track
  8. Separate Modules
  9. Teardown Modules
  10. Load Into Vehicles
  11. Conduct After Action Review
  12. Go Home and Get Plenty of Rest
